Native TREES, SHRUBS and PERENNIALS are species that naturally occur in a region without human introduction. They evolve to fit local climates, soils, insects and wildlife. They also adapt to local conditions which make them essential for healthy ecosystems.
NATIVE TREES are an excellent food source for birds and wildlife providing nuts, seeds, fruits, and habitat shelter. They also improve air quality and sequester carbon. They’re also drought tolerant once established due to their ability to adapt to local climates.
NATIVE SHRUBS add texture, flowers (some fragrant), and fall color to the garden. They provide dense cover and nesting sites for birds and wildlife while also providing essential berries and seeds that are an important food source. Some are evergreen, some deciduous and provide a grand understory layer to any landscape.
NATIVE PERENNIALS provide seasonal blooms that add continuous structure and color to the garden. They are also a main pollinator source for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Most are low maintenance and adapt well to local soils. They need to be cut back to the grown at the end of the season and will regrow back from the same root system each spring.
